Quick Intro...

Hi, I'm AJ Vanderhorst. Born in Lawrence, Kansas, home of the mighty Jayhawks, I currently live near downtown Kansas City. I'm married to the beautiful Lindsay, and have two rambunctious kids, Aidan and Asher. At the moment, my goal is to freelance write & get an urban church plant off the ground. It would also be cool to keep my hoops game alive and see a downtown Renaissance in KC.

Another Thing...

This blog is where I think out loud about knowing Jesus, living out my theology, and making risky plans, so it has a personal, sometimes confessional flavor. We want to see a new, Jesus-exalting, culturally-focused work of God started in the urban arts district of KC. Feel free to contact me if something here sparks your interest.

Sitting on Eternity’s Front Porch

Sometimes really old preachers have the best eye for analogies. Here’s Gregory the Great writing about the cryptic passage in Ezekiel where the prophet gets a vision of an archetypal new temple–including, yes, a porch:

What then is meant by the inner porch but the breadth of eternal life, which now in the limits of our present life is only conceived in the mind through hope? - Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture: Ezekiel, Daniel

I like the thought that, with strong hope, our life can be spent kicked back drinking lemonade and shade on Heaven’s front porch. So to speak.

    Ariel,

I just thought I’d visit and do a little virtual housewarming and see what the fuss is about. And here I’m standing on the front porch, so to speak. You should painting the ceiling of your porch blue (a tradition in the South) for one of two reasons, depending on whom you ask: 1) it keeps the Devil from getting in your house; 2) Flies don’t like to land on blue-colored surfaces. Either or both are decent reasons, no?

Best of luck with this new venture. I understand your reasoning, but I personally liked not quite knowing what I’d find when I visited Bittersweet Life. Ah well. Best of luck. I’ll be linking to you.

FYI I have both of your blogs in my Google reader.

@ John, I couldn’t figure out how to paint the blog’s ceiling blue, but I did what I could with the background of your comment. Thanks for coming over!

@ Spyder, thank you kindly, I appreciate it.
